Most drivers navigate countless intersections each day without a second thought. Even young children know that a green light means “go” and a red light means “stop.”
But what happens when you come upon an intersection with flashing lights? Whether you’re facing a full set of traffic lights flashing in unison or a quiet intersection with a single light suspended above, this unfamiliar sight can instantly make you feel unsure of what to do.
Fortunately, navigating intersections with flashing lights is more straightforward than you may realize. Here’s a closer look.
What Does a Flashing Red Light Mean?
A flashing red light at an intersection is the equivalent of a stop sign. It means that you must come to a full stop and check to make sure it’s safe to proceed before driving on.
Flashing red lights aren’t very common. They are often seen at intersections where traffic lights are malfunctioning. However, some areas may switch to flashing red lights at non-peak hours.
Less commonly, a jurisdiction might determine that a smaller intersection needs more than a stop sign but less than a full set of traffic lights. In this case, it might add a single flashing red or yellow traffic light.
What Does a Flashing Yellow Light Mean?
Like flashing red lights, flashing yellow lights sometimes appear when an intersection’s traffic lights are malfunctioning. At an intersection, a flashing yellow light means you should proceed with caution. You don’t have to come to a complete stop before driving through, but you should slow down enough that you can look for pedestrians and oncoming traffic before proceeding.
Flashing yellow arrows are similar. If you come across a flashing yellow arrow on a turn lane, it means that you must yield the right of way to pedestrians and oncoming traffic. Once you have verified it is safe to proceed, you may drive through with caution.
It’s important to remember that a flashing yellow arrow isn’t the same as a steady yellow arrow. If the arrow is steady, that means the light is about to turn red.
What If the Traffic Lights Aren’t Working at All?
In many cases, malfunctioning traffic lights can still flash in unison. But what happens if the lights are completely dark or flashing erratically? In this case, you should treat the intersection like a four-way stop.
Georgia’s rules for handling four-way stops are similar to those in other states:
- Generally, the first car to arrive at the intersection is the first to drive through
- All cars must come to a complete stop before driving through
- If two cars arrive at once, the one on the right goes first
- Cars going straight generally have the right of way over cars that are turning
Like other state laws, Georgia’s traffic rules stress that even if a driver knows they have the right of way, they should yield if doing so is the only way to avoid an accident.
Handling Flashing Traffic Lights With Confidence
It’s always important to be careful at intersections (or when driving at all), but you should use extra caution when approaching flashing lights. Distracted drivers and those who are unfamiliar with how flashing traffic lights work might keep driving when they don’t have the right of way—and you should be prepared to yield to avoid a crash.
When you understand how flashing lights work and proceed with a healthy dose of caution, you increase the likelihood that you can safely pass through and arrive at your destination unharmed.
