You might think of Brunswick, Georgia, as a diamond in the rough. It’s a coastal city — the Gateway to the Golden Isles, in fact — bursting with history and Southern charm that often gets unfairly overshadowed by larger, more famous neighbors like Savannah and Jacksonville.
It also sometimes faces a reputation for being less safe than some other parts of Georgia. But is that bad rap entirely deserved?
The truth is, like any city, Brunswick has its challenges around safety. Recent crime statistics show that Brunswick’s overall crime rate is relatively high. There’s a 1 in 79 chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Brunswick.
But bear in mind that these are city-wide statistics. In reality, crime isn’t evenly distributed across every pocket of Brunswick. There are certain neighborhoods within city limits that boast significantly lower crime rates than other areas.
Sterling
Located to the northwest of downtown Brunswick, Sterling is primarily residential and is known for a quieter, more suburban feel. It offers a mix of housing options, from single-family homes to some apartment complexes, so there’s something to serve any budget. Sterling also typically enjoys lower crime rates than the city’s core, with residents often reporting that they feel safe.
Country Club Estates
Can you imagine anything going sideways in a place called “Country Club?” As the name suggests, it’s an upscale neighborhood built around a golf course and country club. Country Club Estates tends to have very low crime rates. The presence of private security and an active homeowner’s association certainly don’t hurt.
Dock Junction
Located south of downtown, Dock Junction has seen some recent revitalization. It’s a more mixed-used area than some of the other neighborhoods on the list. It’s home to residential homes as well as some industrial and commercial buildings due to its convenient location on the waterfront.
While Dock Junction’s crime rates might be slightly higher than some other neighborhoods, it’s generally considered a safer part of town than some of the more central parts of Brunswick, thanks in part to community efforts to improve the area and increase police presence.
Jekyll Island
Technically, Jekyll Island is its own municipality, so it’s just across the causeway from the city proper. If you’ve ever visited a state park and thought, “I wish I could live somewhere this pretty,” Jekyll Island might be the place for you.
This state park-turned-residential-community naturally has a strong focus on preserving its natural beauty. It also boasts exceptionally low crime rates despite the fact that it’s a relatively touristy area, thanks in part to Jekyll Island Authority. Additionally, as a state park, the land is protected.
St. Simons Island
It’s a similar story for St. Simons Island. This Golden Isle is larger than Jekyll Island and hosts a mix of residential areas, resorts, and commercial activity. Its low population density and heavy community involvement both keep crime rates down. It’s considered a very safe place to live, actively patrolled by the Glynn County Police Department.
Stay Safe in Brunswick
If you settle down in any of the areas above, you might start to question if Brunswick truly deserves its bad rap, and therein lies the truth of city living anywhere — it depends on the area.
Almost every major metropolis has trouble with crime, but the rate and concentration can vary on a granular level, block by block. In the end, it’s about finding your pocket of safety within that concrete jungle.
But bear in mind that even the safest places don’t make you immune to car accidents, slip and falls, injuries, and even crimes. Make sure to take steps to keep your family safe: get involved in your community and learn what resources are available to you so you have them when you need them.
